On May 22, 2023, a significant event took place in Taipei as the inaugural U.S.-Taiwan Science and Technology Cooperation Dialogue (STC-D) was held. This strategic dialogue brought together representatives from various government agencies in Taiwan and the United States to reinforce cooperation and understanding in the field of science and technology (S&T).

The STC-D is a remarkable milestone, marking the first high-level joint dialogue focused on S&T issues since the signing of the Taiwan-U.S. Scientific and Technological Cooperation Agreement in 2020. The decision to hold this dialogue was confirmed during the U.S.-Taiwan Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue in 2021, highlighting the commitment to fostering stronger ties between the two nations.

Led by National Science and Technology Council Minister Tsung-Tsong Wu and U.S. Department of State Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary Jason Donovan, the dialogue aimed to strengthen bilateral research partnerships and explore opportunities for collaboration in key areas. The meeting prioritized discussions on semiconductor research and applications, medical supply chain resilience, cancer research, environmental modeling and research, as well as research integrity encompassing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA).

The U.S. delegation included officials from prestigious institutions such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Institutes of Health National Cancer Institute (NIH/NCI), and the National Institutes of Standards and Technology (NIST). Meanwhile, the Taiwanese delegation comprised representatives from the National Science and Technology Council, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Academia Sinica.

The inaugural U.S.-Taiwan Science and Technology Cooperation Dialogue not only demonstrates the commitment of both nations to strengthening bilateral relations but also lays the foundation for enhanced scientific collaboration.
